We’re thrilled to announce that Lucia & Nicole has been awarded Best New Mexico Short (Platinum Award) in Mindfield Film Festival’s bi-monthly competition! This recognition also makes the film a Finalist for the festival’s 2025 live event in Albuquerque, bringing this deeply personal story one step closer to more audiences.
A Story Rooted in Love, Community & Identity
Shot entirely in Albuquerque with a New Mexico-based cast and crew, Lucia & Nicole explores the moments that define love and belonging. The story follows Lucia (Romance Suarez), a young woman on the cusp of adulthood, who reconnects with her childhood friend Nicole (Claudia Levis) after discovering she’s been living on the street. As Lucia’s mother opens their home, their reconnection forces them all to confront unspoken truths about love, family, and identity.
A Celebration of New Mexico Filmmaking

For writer/director Marlene Emilia Rios, who studied filmmaking at the University of New Mexico before earning her MA from London Film School, returning to Albuquerque to make Lucia & Nicole was a full-circle moment.

This award adds to Marlene’s growing recognition in independent film. Her previous short, We Choose To Go, screened at over 15 international festivals, was distributed by DUST, and won the UFVF/Kodak Excellence in Filmmaking Grant.
What’s Next for Lucia & Nicole?
With this latest recognition, Lucia & Nicole continues its festival journey. As we wait for the next round of selections, we’re excited to share more about the film’s journey and upcoming opportunities to see it on the big screen.
